(ESSEX, ON) – The Essex Region Conservation Authority is advising that the previous flood watch, issued yesterday evening, has been updated to a flood warning.
Forecasted winds out of the west at 25 to 35kph with gusts exceeding 45 to 55kph is responsible for the upgraded warning. The warning is in effect for Leamington, all areas west of Point Pelee National Park, and for the west coast shoreline areas of Pelee Island.
The West Shore Road of Pelee Island has been closed.
Point Pelee National Park has also been closed so park officials can assess flood damage.
Flooding, shoreline erosion, and damaging waves are occurring in the affected areas, and portions of the travelled road surface and private lands are covered with water.
The public is advised to avoid areas where flooding is occurring. People who must access these areas are advised to use extreme caution when travelling through floodwater.
Flowing water, standing water, and waves overtopping shoreline breakwalls can be extremely dangerous. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from flowing water, standing water, and shoreline/breakwall areas.
All vehicular traffic should stay out of these areas.
