Call 511 For Winter Road Conditions

(LONDON, ON) – West Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Command is asking all motorists to get in the mindset of winter driving now before the snow begins to fly.  All too often drivers are caught off guard with the first snow fall and police end up investigating hundreds of crashes across the region.

Motorists should do the following to help prepare for winters arrival;

  • Tune your vehicle to prevent break downs along the way.
  • Invest in snow tires as they provide traction and better control in snow.
  • Make sure your wipers are in good shape and windshield levels are topped off.
  • Make sure all your lights are working properly.
  • Make sure your exhaust is in good repair.
  • Ensure keep your gas tank above ½ tank full at all times.
  • Ensure you have a survival kit in your vehicle.
  • Always clear all your windows of ice and snow prior to driving anywhere.
  • Share your traveled route with others.
  • Keep your cell phone charged and available in your car for emergencies.
  • If you experience vehicle trouble, get off the road and stay in your vehicle.

“IF YOU SEE SNOW … GO SLOW”Sgt. Rektor’s annual advice.

This year the OPP are also pleading with motorists to call 511 on any phone to get road and weather conditions along provincial highways.  This number will provide motorists with the best information possible in order to help in planning trips.

The OPP do not want anyone calling into the Communications Centre to ask about road and weather conditions.   The OPP should only be called for emergencies or to acquire police assistance on police related matters.  Police warn citizens that calling 911 or the non-emergent phone line to ask about roads and weather ties up phone lines that are needed for others in emergency situations.
