(DETROIT, MI) – For months, US authorities have been investigating the infiltration of illegal entrants into the States via the northern border with Canada. Border Patrol agents have been arresting undocumented immigrants since March as they entered the US by sneaking through the 1.6 mile-long CP Rail tunnel running beneath the Detroit River between Windsor and the Motor City.

Yesterday, agents captured Juan Antonio Garcia-Jimenez, the alleged ringmaster of the human smuggling endeavour. He appeared in US District court where he was ordered o be detained. Garcia-Jimenez is a Guatemalan native and naturalized Canadian.

According to court documents, Garcia-Jimenez was paid $1,500 by each of at least five individuals to assist them to walk through the tunnel into the US. As the illegals exited the tunnel, Border Patrol agents arrested the individuals. Each of them identified Garcia-Jimenez as the smuggler.

Garcia-Jimenez will again appear in court on a bond hearing.
