(WINDSOR, ON) – On Thanksgiving Monday, Windsor Police was dispatched to the area of Milloy Street and Ellrose Avenue, initially for a report of a injured person. Officers arrived to find a man, 20, with extensive burn injuries to his arms and legs.
Essex-Windsor EMS were called to the scene and transported the injured man to hospital. His burn injuries are severe, but not life-threatening.
Officers located a pair of shoes, believed to belong to the man, which had a strong odour of gasoline. Officers learned that Windsor Fire and Rescue was on scene at a garage fire in the 1500 block of Arthur Road.
The close proximity of the fire to where the injured man was found led to further investigation. The garage contained a vehicle which had been burnt down to the frame. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and police contained the scene.
Officers were able to confirm the identity of the injured man and learned that he had earlier met with another man. Police located the second man, 18, at a residence in the 200 block of Jos Janisse Avenue, and found that he had minor burn injuries as well as an odour of gas on his clothing. He was arrested without incident.
Gavin Blok-Kavanaugh, 18, from Windsor, was charged with one count of arson.
The incident remains under investigation by Windsor Police’s Arson Unit as well as the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.
