(WINDSOR, ON) – LiUNA local 625, the Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent Labourers’ International Union of North America, has announced that select, naturally grown, pharma-grade medicinal cannabis products will now be covered under the organization’s benefits plan.
“We’ve been working diligently on this initiative with key partners for several months,” said Rob Petroni, Business Manager of LiUNA625. “Offering medicinal cannabis as a prescription reimbursement underscores our commitment to the health and well-being of our 1,500 members and their families, now 3,600 strong throughout Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.”
LiUNA’s benefit plan is well regarded industry wide for its comprehensive coverage. Structuring this ground-breaking initiative has been a priority for the trustees of LiUNA’s benefits trust, resulting in a precedent setting program and a first in North America.
Members and their families will receive optimum counselling, guidance, and prescription services throughout their treatment program.
“Communities across North America are struggling with over-prescribed painkillers in excessively high doses that has led to the opioid crisis,” Petroni said. “Our priority at LiUNA is health and safety, on and off the job site. Being at the forefront of medicinal cannabis care will minimize the health risks to our members and reinforce the organization’s responsibilities to provide we trained, highly skilled construction craft workers.”
