(CHATHAM, ON) – Yesterday afternoon, first responders were called to the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Communication Road for a report of a five-vehicle chain reaction collision.

Around 3:45pm, slow moving traffic in the construction zone contributed to a crash involving three transport trucks and two passenger vehicles. One tractor trailer was stopped when the second truck collided into the rear of the trailer. A third truck followed suit and the two smaller vehicles drove into the back of the third.

All the vehicles involved sustained moderate damage and were required to be towed from the scene. Minor injuries were reported.

Graham Clayton, 69, of Windsor, and Jason Hearn, 35, of St Thomas, were charged with following too closely.

Kulwant Virk, 51, of Brampton, was charged with careless driving.

Additionally, another driver of a transport attempted to turn around by using the centre median. He became stuck resulting in the need to be recovered. Vishnu Vulpala, 25, of Scarborough, was charged with careless driving in addition to two log book offenses.

Highway 401 was closed for several hours to allow for the safe removal of all the tractor trailers.
