(ESSEX, ON) – Residents of Ward 3 in Essex will be going to the polls on October 23, to fill the Ward 3 vacancy. One of the two positions in Ward 3, formerly Colchester South, became vacant in early July following the resignation of Councillor Bill Caixeiro.
Nominations opened on Tuesday this week and will remain open until September 7 at 2:00pm.
Interested residents may obtain a nomination package, including the prescribed nomination form, from the Clerk’s office at Town Hall, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Candidates for municipal office must be qualified electors.
A person is qualified to be elected or hold office as a member of council if the following requirements are met:
- Reside in the Town of Essex or are a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality, or the spouse of a non-resident owner or tenant;
- A Canadian citizen;
- At least 18 years old;
- Not legally prohibited from voting or disqualified from holding municipal office under the Municipal Elections Act or any other Act.
An Advance Poll for the Ward 3 By-election will be held on October 14 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Harrow and Colchester South Community Centre. The method of voting will be by traditional paper ballot.
Electronic tabulators will be used for counting ballots.
The Voters’ List, a list of persons who are eligible to vote in the by-election, is currently being compiled. Persons on the Voters’ List will be mailed a Voter Notification Card in mid-September. To be added to the Voters’ list after mid-September, eligible persons must attend in person at Essex Town Hall and complete an Application to Amend the Voters’ List. Personal photo identification will be required.
