(WINDSOR, ON) – Hundreds of gaming enthusiasts converged at the Sportsplex on Saturday and Sunday to participate in the kickoff event for the new St Clair Saints eSports team, which begins in September. Over 350 competitors as well as cosplay fans launched the event by competing in a video game tournament with $15,000 in cash prizes at stake.

“High school students, college students, people who have graduated years ago, we even have people traveling from all over Canada and the US,” said organizer Shaun Byrne. “And we have one person coming all the way from the UK to compete.”

Incoming St Clair students who competed received a $500 bursary for the 2017-18 school year.

The event feature seven different game offerings for the competition, including League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Hearthstone, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Street Fighter V.

“Some of these events are factoring into the international ranking systems, so players who preform well here are going to be recognized,” explained Byrne. “And getting recognized on that level helps you gain sponsors and maybe even get you signed to a pro team.”

As well, there were free-gaming areas, cosplay contests, and a vendor and artist area. The entire event was also livestreamed to thousands of spectators.

Players who did well at the kickoff will be invited to a competition in Toronto in August.
