(CHATHAM, ON) – A contingent of Chatham-Kent council members and senior staff will join more than 1,900 participants at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s 2017 Conference in Ottawa, from August 13 to 16.
Councillors Darrin Canniff, Joe Faas, Brock McGregor, David VanDamme, and Carmen McGregor, will be joined by CAO Don Shropshire, Chief Legal Officer John Norton, Chief Human Resource Officer Cathy Hoffman, Community Development General Manager Bob Crawford, Health and Family Services General Manager April Riedyk, and Director of Seniors Services Tami Gillier.
Shropshire said the conference provides an excellent opportunity for interaction with provincial officials as well as those from other municipalities.
Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Ontario’s Premier, Minister of Municipal Affairs, and both opposition leaders are featured speakers, and several additional provincial ministers will participate in the conference.
The annual conference is a chance for municipal officials to discuss and move forward on shared challenges, to learn, and to create new opportunities that can benefit their communities. In addition to the conference program, municipal staff and officials will take part in municipal delegation meetings with provincial and federal ministries.
Key session topics include the need for new and modern approaches to funding municipal government, changes to the Ontario Municipal Board, infrastructure and transit, climate change, new waste legislation, and changes to the Blue Box program, marijuana legalization, the digital and sharing economy, affordable housing, police modernization, and much more.
These province-wide matters have local implications for the community.
