Car Sales Temper July Rise

(RICHMOND HILL, ON) – The total light vehicle sales in July increased 4.9% with 181,834 units sold. Passenger car sales decreased 1.7% while light truck sales increased 8.3%. Despite the overall increase in light truck sales, six of the top ten best selling light trucks recorded sales decreases for July 2017.

Looking at passenger cars, the Mazda3 and the Kia Forte recorded sales increases of 67.0% and 50.2% year-over-year, respectively, despite the overall decline in passenger car sales.

The light truck market performed well year-over-year with increases recorded for all segments except small van (-10.7%) while steady year-over-year sales in the compact car segment prevented a more significant drop in overall passenger car sales.

Among the provinces, only Quebec (-2.6%) and Prince Edward Island (-2.2%) recorded sales decreases year-over-year. The largest percentage sales increases for July 2017 were recorded by Nova Scotia (+26.0%), New Brunswick (+18.9%), and Alberta (+13.6%).
