Blue Menu Pancake Mix Recalled

(WINDSOR, ON) – A recall notice has been issued by Loblaw Companies Limited, which operates stores under various brands in the region. The company is reporting that two of its in-store brands, President’s Choice and Blue Menu Protein Pancake Mix, may contain lupin flour.

The two versions of its mixes that may have the flour are those for buttermilk and apple cinnamon pancakes. They were on shelves between February 1 and May 5.

Lupin flour could cause a potential reaction for consumers with peanut allergies. Lupin itself is a legume, belonging to the same plant family as peanuts.

Loblaw cautions that lupin is not considered to be one of Canada’s priority allergens. It also does not require additional precautionary label on packaging, nor is there currently one approved for use.

In an effort to ensure the safety of its products, Loblaw says it is looking forward to working with Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on how best to inform Canadians about the potential risk of lupin.

Although the products were sold at local Zehr’s, No Frills, and Real Canadian Superstores, they may also have been on offer at affiliated independent grocery stores.
