Provincial By-Election Called For Simcoe North

By Ian Shalapata

(TORONTO, ON) – A writ was issued yesterday, under Section 9.1 of the Election Act, for a by-election in the riding of Simcoe North, just north of Barrie.

The by-election will fill a vacancy created in the provincial parliament that came about after veteran MP Garfield Dunlop resigned so that new PC leader Patrick Brown could attempt to gain a seat in the legislature.

Brown doesn’t feel that a provincial by-election will confuse voters of the riding who will also be subjected to a concurrent federal campaign.

Under the Election Act, elections must be called on a Wednesday and held the fifth Thursday after the date of the issue of the writ. Voting day, therefore, will be September 3.
