Lane Reduction On Highway 401

By Janine Belanger

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) – The Chatham-Kent OPP are advising the public regarding road construction currently taking place on Highway 401 between Merlin Road and Essex County Road 42. The westbound lanes of the highway in that area are closed for resurfacing.

A median crossover is in place for westbound traffic and vehicles are being directed to follow the median crossover and continue westbound in the eastbound lane. The two eastbound lanes now serve as one westbound lane and one eastbound lane.

The speed limit is reduced to 80kph.

There is also a median crossover in place for motorists to access the westbound On Route Service Centre.

Access to Highway 401 westbound at Queens Line is closed.

The estimated end of construction is November 27.

Chatham-Kent OPP officers have been kept busy responding to a number of collisions that have occurred within the construction zone, and are urging motorists to exercise patience when travelling through this area. Allow plenty of room between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.

Also be prepared to stop suddenly, as traffic may come to a halt at any given time.

Choose an alternative route if possible.

Chatham-Kent OPP are also reminding motorists that the fine for speeding is doubled when construction workers are present. Officers will be conducting regular patrols and enforcement in the construction zone.
