High Winds Cause Havoc

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) – There were 31 separate calls to police about a variety of possible unsafe conditions in the community due to the sustained high winds. Here is a list of the types of problems that came up:

  • Downed hydro poles and wires, an outage in Merlin area for part of the day
  • Downed trees, many blocking roads
  • Metal shed blown into roadway
  • Downed stop sign
  • Traffic signal light broken
  • Train stop-arms broken

Obviously some of these have a direct safety issue such as for hydro wires and poles down, but even blowing debris could be an issue in a traffic situation. Through it all we had no reports of injuries and we’d like to thank all the callers for reporting these unsafe conditions so that appropriate services could come and deal with the problems including hydro workers, parks staff, works staff, police and many others, who were kept busy due to the high winds.
