Elderly Lady Defrauded

(MONCTON, NB) – Codiac RCMP are investigating a case of fraud reported to have occurred on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. An 86-year-old Moncton woman received a phone call from an unknown man requesting money. He asked her to take out a large sum of money and meet him in the parking lot of the Jean Coutu store in Riverview. Believing she was helping her church, the woman agreed to meet with the unknown man and gave him the money. The victim later realized she had been defrauded and contacted police. The man is described as being middle-aged and sporting a baseball hat.

Investigators have also received reports of similar attempts being made on other potential victims. In those cases, victims did not agree to provide the money and reported the attempt to police. The RCMP is asking anyone who may have information about this crime, or believe that they or a family member may have been a victim of a similar crime, to contact police. “These criminals seem to be targeting some of the most vulnerable members of society, seniors, “says Cpl. Dan Roy. “We’re asking other victims, or anyone with information, to please contact police.”
