Mother Assaulted In Hospital
(NANAIMO, BC) – Early Saturday morning August 4th the mother of a two day old new-born was assaulted by the child’s father while she recuperated in the maternity ward of the Nanaimo Regional General hospital. The accused fled after the assault and was located and arrested several hours later in downtown Nanaimo.
Police were called at 6:14 a.m. on Saturday morning after a nurse on the maternity ward said a 27 year old patient had just been assaulted while holding her two day old daughter. Officers attended to the hospital and spoke with the victim who said an argument had ensued between her and the accused. At one point while holding her child, she was punched in the head. Fearing for the safety of her daughter she placed it in a nearby basinet then managed to push the accused out of the room. The male was last seen running out of the hospital. Alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor for the behaviour of the male.
The victim nor the enfant were injured during the altercation. Members were able to locate the male just before 1 p.m. on Nicol St and took him into custody without incident. The 30 year old male from Tofino was arrested for Assault and Breach of Probation. The breach charge stemmed from a previous court order issued on February 9th which prohibited him from having consumed alcohol while in the presence of the victim.
The accused was remanded by consent until Tuesday August 7th and is expected to appear in Nanaimo Provincial court later today.
