Sporting A Musical Side
By Bill Nuvo
(WINDSOR, ON) – Alex Seguin is a leading force for the Leamington Flyers. His season thus far has been stellar. One can often hear “he shoots, he scores!” both on and off the ice. This is because Alex, besides being a hockey player, also shoots and scores music videos.
Bill Nuvo: Sports and Music. What an interesting mash-up! Just like your video of Mistletoe/I’m Yours/Where is the Love, all can have similar Harmonies and work well together. How do you find the balance and harmony (or rather the “likeness”) between producing music and scoring goals?
Alex Seguin: It is a pretty odd combination of hobbies, and I do get a few surprised looks from people when I tell them what I do. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that Music and Hockey are two similar things, but I think the reason why I’m attracted to both is because I like to be creative, whether it’s making plays on the ice or coming up with ideas in the studio, it gives me a chance to think of new things and try to be successful.
BN: I like how you feature many different artists and seem to take a “backseat” approach to being in the spotlight. It kind of reminds me of Timbaland and how he produces for many artists. Do you see yourself in a similar light?
AS: Absolutely, I think that part of being a producer is being able to accept the fact that you will not always be the center of attention. Production is creating ideas to really help the artist shine through their song. I think that’s what attracts me to it the most, being able to help out other people.
BN: How long have you been playing an instrument?
AS: I picked up a guitar just before grade ten (close to 5 years ago) and have fallen in love with it ever since. I taught myself, and am constantly learning new stuff.
BN: What’s it like seeing your videos getting a lot of hits?
AS: It’s exciting to see the videos I make get a lot of views because it’s good to know that people appreciate my work. It’s a very satisfying feeling to see one of my productions do well.
BN: Have you ever entered into any remix/cover contests? You should check out Indabamusic.com .
AS: I haven’t as of yet although I should definitely start. It would be a great way to promote my videos a bit more.
BN: You tend towards an accoustic sound. Why is that?
BN: I’ve never been a big fan of rap or pop songs you hear on the radio nowadays, however my targeted audience (youtube viewers) love to see covers of the latest songs on the radio. So in order for me to make these covers and actually enjoy doing it, I had to find a balance. If I didn’t like that style of music, I could take the same melody, lyrics ect.. from these songs, and create something much softer and warmer sounding which is that acoustic sound that appeals to me.
BN: What do you hope for the future in regards to new equipment, success in music, a career?
AS: My goal for now is to enjoy what I’m doing. Between Hockey and School, music is something I do for fun. I do occasionally use it as a part time job producing for various local artists, however for now, I can’t make it my top priority because I’m just too busy. Later on, when school and hockey are done for me, I would like to run my own studio and become a Professional Music Producer. I can’t really see myself doing anything else.
