Absolutely Delicious

By Adriana Strah

(WINDSOR, BC) – I hate protein bars. I hate the consistency. I hate the flavor but  I DO understand why they are necessary. You’re out on the trail on a long run and you don’t have the luxury of sitting down and eating a meal to replace the calories you’ve just burned over the last 3 hrs. However,  the thought of biting into a chewy protein bar that tastes like chemicals is even less appetizing to me.

At least that was true, until I found Daryl’s Hi-N-R-G Bars. This is not a promotion for the company or anything like that. I just LOVE the bars. They are all natural, taste great and get me energized and keep me energized throughout my long runs. I found the bars while working the canfitpro Toronto Conference and Tradeshow in August when  looking for a supplement to keep my energy stable during long runs. I found that the gels just weren’t cutting it. I would get a burst of energy but because they were made up of simple sugars my energy would flag soon after. As I walked by this unassuming booth with some samples of their delicious cereal sprinkled over top of vanilla yogurt, I grabbed a cup and kept walking scooping the tiny sample into my mouth thinking, I would probably have to spit this one out too. To my amazement it was delicious. Absolutely delicious. I would eat this even if it wasn’t to maintain my performance. I quickly circled back and took a look at the ingredients (all natural!) and the calorie count and of course the price. Thank goodness for conference deals! I asked the young man at the booth about training and looking for something easy on the stomach, tasty and all natural and he said he has tons of people who come into the factory who train for marathons. Not only that, Mr. Windsor endorses them! If you don’t believe me check their website! www.darylsbars.com

Nutrition is an important factor in everyone’s life; not just for a runner or bodybuilder or cyclist. It can definitely make or break their progress. My focus however is on maintaining energy throughout a run. I read somewhere - or heard it - that when you’re racing is not the time to starve your body. It never really occurred to me to actually eat. Oh sure I’d seen people eating bananas along the route. I’d seen belts full of gels and protein bars tucked in secret pockets, but it had never occurred to me that I might benefit from a little snack on a 30 kilometer run. I’d always followed the 70-30 rule the night before, 70 percent of my meal was carbs and 30 percent was protein. In the morning I would eat my slow burning carb breakfast of oatmeal with some fresh or dried fruit.  By mid run my energy would be flagging and my mind would be thinking about the end point instead of enjoying the run. Yes, I said enjoying a 30km run. Once I had purchased Daryl’s bars I couldn’t wait to get out on the road and see what they could do. It was like night and day. I ate half of the bar a third of the way through my race and the other half two thirds of the way through and my energy levels stayed at high the entire time! I was amazed. I was hooked for life.

So my advice for you runners out there is that if you feel like you need a boost mid run try out Daryl’s bars. They are located right here in Windsor Ontario and you can find the address for the factory on their website www.darylsbars.com. I wouldn’t recommend them if they didn’t work. What’s even better is that they are easy on the stomach and incredibly tasty.
